Separate the calendar into three parts
Mark arrival, full activity days and departure on the proposed itinerary. A late embarkation may be a meaningful night aboard without being a sightseeing day. Likewise, an early return may leave little room for another activity. This simple distinction makes two proposals with the same number of nights much easier to compare.
Choose the focus before adding stops
A diving-led voyage, a gentle island trip and a multi-region cruise need different rhythms. Decide which experience would make the journey worthwhile even if another stop had to change. Use that priority to judge whether the suggested duration gives enough room for rest and repeat opportunities, rather than trying to include every place on a map.
Ask what an extra day would change
An additional day might create a slower crossing, a second chance for a weather-sensitive activity or simply more relaxed time aboard. Ask the planner to explain the benefit rather than automatically extending a destination list. If time is fixed, request a shorter route with a clear purpose instead of compressing the longest available sample itinerary.
Include the days around the boat
Arrival buffers and onward flights occupy travel time even when they sit outside the boat booking. Consider them when comparing the whole holiday, including leave from work and international connections. Confirm the operator’s recommended margins before buying tickets so the journey is realistic from the first flight to the last transfer.
Your planning checklist
- Count full activity days separately.
- Choose one main purpose for the trip.
- Compare focused and wider routes.
- Include arrival and return buffers.
Good questions, clear answers.
Is the shortest advertised trip always practical?
It depends on the format and the experience you want. Ask what is actually included in each day.
Does a longer trip guarantee more destinations?
No. Conditions and route choices still apply, and additional time may be better used for a gentler pace.
